The program will consist of scientific papers that report original research in reading. Topics include but are not limited to the following: basic cognitive representations and processes in text comprehension, discourse processing, reading acquisition, skilled reading, spelling, individual differences in reading, neural processes, genetic factors, connections between spoken and written language, and reading difficulties.
A high level of international participation is expected.

This is an invitation for presentations on interesting theoretical issues in the broad area of research on reading, empirically approached with sound methodology. Proposals should be original and not have been published nor presented at another professional meeting

Symposia
A symposium provides an opportunity to examine one topic in depth or from different perspectives. Symposium sessions are directed by one chair, with five presenters of 15 min spoken papers, each followed by a brief discussion. An international mix of contributors is encouraged. Members of SSSR who are interested in organizing a symposium should initially contact the programme committee to prevent duplicate themes.

Interactive paper sessions
The interactive (poster) sessions involve a text and graphic display of research findings in the field of reading. Interactive presentation is an excellent format for presenting your research in a way that encourages real, in-depth and stimulating discussions, both for senior and promising young researchers. This format is therefore highly recommended by the Society.

Paper sessions
The paper sessions comprise 15-minute oral presentations of five papers, each followed by audience discussion. The program committee will attempt to organize these into topically coherent sessions, depending on the number of symposia and available space. If space is limited, presenters will be encouraged to join the interactive paper sessions.

People eligible to submit
Papers may be presented by voting members, active members, and student members of SSSR, or where there is space, by other active reading researchers not (yet) a member of the Society (see http://www.triplesr.org/ for information on how to become a member, including a subscription to the highly respected journal Scientific Studies of Reading, LEA).

Format
Proposals from active members, student members, and not-yet members consist of a title, a maximum 100 word abstract, and a 1-2 page (2 page maximum) summary, which explains the major questions and methods of the study and the importance of the results. Priority goes to scientific studies that are completed. Papers will be reviewed by a program committee.
Proposals submitted by voting members need to include only titles and abstracts and will normally be accepted without review. Papers that are part of a symposium organized by a SSSR member (voting or active) may be collectively submitted.

Acceptance
Although an attempt will be made to accommodate all proposals judged favorably, space limitations may be a factor in the final selection of papers. If space limits the number of spoken papers, an author's willingness to give an interactive paper (poster) instead of a spoken paper increases the chances of the paper's inclusion on the program. First authors will be notified by email of the acceptance or rejection of the paper.

All authors of papers will be listed in the program, with the first author designated as the presenter. Only one presentation will be accepted per first author. Any author who becomes unable to present a paper listed in the program should contact the program chair immediately by email. Failure to do so may result in loss of eligibility at the next year's meeting. Your email submission is taken to affirm your understanding that proposals for this meeting are original and affirm that your identical proposal has not been published nor presented at another professional meeting.

Submission
Proposals should be e-mailed before December 16, 2005 to CRL@psych.york.ac.uk. The program will be published on the SSSR website in the Spring of 2006. Notice of acceptance will be made as soon as possible (by Jan.16) to allow travel plans can be made.

Include the following information in your email proposal:

1. First Author (emailaddress; affiliation), co-authors. Title of the presentation
2. 100 word (maximum!) abstract
3. Membership Status:
   1. Voting
   2. Active
   3. Student
   4. Nonmember - Application for membership to be submitted (see SSSR website).
4. Preference for participation
   1. Interactive Paper (poster)
   2. Spoken paper but willing to give an interactive paper if necessary
   3. Spoken paper only.
5. Are you willing to chair a session? (a) yes, (b) no.
6. 250 to 500 word summary (if the answer on 3 is not a.).

Submit your proposal by email. Send it to: CRL@psych.york.ac.uk and have "Call SSSR" as the subject. Include the full submission in the email, as well as as an attachment.

The conference will be held in Vancouver on July 6-8 at the campus of the University of British Columbia. Inexpensive accommodation will be available on campus. Details will be available shortly.
