14th Annual Conference – SSSR
Corinthia Towers Hotel, Prague
Transportation Information
Public transit is cheap, efficient, and integrated in Prague. It includes a metro, tram, and a bus network, as well as a funicular to the top of Petřín (a look-out point). What's more, the hotel is conveniently situated atop a metro station (Vyšehrad). As a first tip, I would recommend investing in a 3-day or a 7-day pass (see below) upon arrival, unless you intend to do very little commuting to and from the hotel. The pass becomes activated when you first validate it in a metro, tram or bus. Alternatively, you can buy single tickets every time you travel by any of the public transit means. All of these ticket types are valid in the city of Prague, defined as Zones One and Two.
A single fare costs either:
14 Czk, valid for 20 minutes and is non-transferable [you can only use it on one means of transportation except the funicular], or,
20 Czk, which is valid for 90 minutes and is transferable [you can transfer as many times as you like within the 90 minutes].
Luggage: When travelling with luggage [a big suitcase], you need to have in addition to these single-fare tickets, a separate the luggage ticket which costs 10 Czk.
You do not need a separate luggage ticket if you get one of the passes described below.
Types of passes:
- One-Day - 80 Czk
- Three-Day - 220 Czk
- Seven-Day - 280 Czk
- Two-Week - 320 Czk
All tickets must be validated when you first enter a means of public transportation. Inspectors of Dopravni podnik do check tickets frequently, especially on the lines to and from the airport. If you don't have a valid ticket you may be asked to pay a penalty of up to 950CZK.
Where to buy the tickets: All types of tickets can be bought at the airport; look for the kiosk for Prague public transportation in the arrivals hall. Otherwise, tickets can be bought at selected Metro stations or in Dopravni podnik Information Centres, hotels, at news stands, travel bureaus, department stores, etc. Single tickets can also be bought from machines (with coins) in every metro station.
Getting to the Hotel:
From the airport:
- With Corinthia Limousines: relatively expensive. Cca 900 Czk (see hotel web page)
- By bus and metro: Get a 20 Czk ticket plus a luggage ticket 10 Czk at the kiosk in the airport terminal (or a multi-day pass). Take bus #119 from the airport (don't forget to validate your tickets as you get on the bus) to Dejvická Metro station (this is a terminus so there's one possible direction to travel), go 5 stops to Muzeum station, and there transfer to the "red" line (C) and go 2 stops to Vyšehrad (direction Háje). Appx. 35-40 min.journey.
- By taxi: the best and most reliable firm is AAA taxi. The phone number is 14014. (see also: http://www.aaa.radiotaxi.cz/cz/). Their cars are now mainly (but not all) yellow and they will give you an estimate for the cost of any journey. They are parked en masse in front of the airport terminals, just flag one down. This should cost 450- 500 Czk.
- By airport shuttle: this is another good way to go if you're going straight into the city centre. The minibus shuttle goes every 20-30 minutes and costs 90 Czk. However, it will leave you in town at Namĕstí Republiky (at metro station Námĕstí Republiky – yellow line) and you would have to go one stop to Florenc station and there transfer on to the "red" line and then 4 stops to Vyšehrad.
