Bringing your reading research to practice at scale

Abstract / Summary:

The United2Read (U2R) partnership, consisting of Learning Ovations, Digital Promise, the University of California - Irvine and MDRC, received the only Expansion Education Innovation Research grant awarded this past year by the US Department of Education. The prime objective of the grant is to bring effective reading research to practice at scale nationwide. The U2R project partners will bring Learning Ovations' A2i Professional Support System to students and teachers across the country with the goal of improving literacy skills and closing the achievement gap. A2i, or assessment-to-instruction, has What Works Clearinghouse certification and ESSA strong evidence of efficacy based on results of seven randomized control trials conducted since 2005.

A2i includes a series of assessments to measure component literacy skills of students and provide information, classroom recommendations and lesson planning tools that teachers can use to individualize literacy instruction in Kindergarten through Grade 3. Over the past 13 years, A2i was developed, evaluated, and scaled with a progression of awards to University of Michigan, FCRR, ASU and UC - Irvine from IES, as well as the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH/NICHD).

This presentation will track the development of A2i from research tool to scalable intervention, and the critical role that different types of funding can play in supporting research to develop innovative teaching and learning products, testing those products for efficacy, redeveloping a scalable intervention, and then implementing the intervention at scale while maintaining efficacy. We will discuss lessons learned by prior attempts at scaling educational technologies. We will also discuss implementation science, as well as EdTech and venture capital risks and benefits in this process. We will highlight, the various paths open to researchers to bring their research and technology to market.
