Abstract / Summary:

Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has become a relevant area within the field of mobile learning (Persson & Nouri, 2018). MALL not only can be adapted and customized to different learning needs and styles, the learning content also can be access anywhere and anytime. Basing the error pattern analysis from students’ behavior, MALL system can also help instructors better understand learners’ status. The current study developed Chinese MALL app, called Hanyu + App. Here we collected 8157 records form 14 Indonesian learners’ performance on Mandarin tones and pronunciation, excluded missing data, we analyzed 6552 records. The results showed that Indonesian learners have a slightly better performance of pronunciation (49.59%) than tones (46.63%). We also found that learners performed differently when they practiced connectives or nouns. The learners performed significantly better in both pronunciation and tones when they placed connectives in a sentence than pronounced alone. For example: for the connective "but—kěshì", the pronunciation accuracy of the word reading was 45.83%, while it was 72.22% in the sentence. Tone accuracy has similar outcomes (54.17% as a single word < 77.78% in a sentence). However, if the words were a noun, then performances will be better when just pronouncing it alone. For example: for the noun "China—zhōngguó", the pronunciation accuracy of the word was 61.11%, as compared with a rate of only 14.29% used in a sentence. Tone accuracy also has similar conclusions (83.33% as a single word > 35.71% in a sentence). Based on the above analysis, we recommend that teachers teach the pronunciation flexibly according to the characteristics of words to improve student’s learning: nouns can be practiced separately in single terms, as connectives should be practiced using sentences.
