Voting membership gives you a direct voice in the future of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. It also opens the door to key leadership opportunities within SSSR.

Why become a voting member?
Voting privileges
Voting members are eligible to vote in elections for:
- Board of Directors:
- President-Elect
- Vice President
- President
- Past President
- Secretary
- Three additional Directors-at-Large
Voting members may also vote on proposed changes and other important Society decisions, including changes to the SSSR bylaws.
Voting members receive email instructions before each election or decision-making vote.
Leadership opportunities
Voting member status is required for several important leadership roles in SSSR, including:
- An elected position on the Board of Directors
- An appointed position as Committee Chair
- An appointed position as Treasurer (must be a U.S. citizen)
- An appointed position on the Financial Advisory Committee
Eligibility and application process
To apply for voting membership, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Submit an application for voting membership by 1 June 2026.
- Have attended the conference and been a named author on a paper or poster on at least two separate occasions before applying. These conferences do not need to be consecutive.
- Include full citation details, including DOI, for three research articles on reading and related areas from a peer-reviewed journal (for example, Scientific Studies of Reading, Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Research in Reading, Reading Research Quarterly, etc.). The applicant must be listed as the sole author, first author, or co-author. Articles may be published or in press.
- Indicate your contribution to each article using the CRediT categories included in the application form.
- Receive approval from a majority of the Membership and Engagement Committee, who must determine that the submitted articles provide evidence that the applicant understands the principles of science and how to apply them to reading research.
- Receive approval from a majority of the Board of Directors. The Board reviews voting membership applications once a year at the annual meeting, and at other times if needed.
Important: Applications that do not include DOIs for all three articles will not be reviewed.
