Voting Membership

Reasons to become a voting member of SSSR

You have a voice in the future of our society in several ways.

  1. Voting members are able to vote* in the following elections:
    • Board of Directors (President Elect, Vice President, President, Past President, and Secretary);
    • three additional Directors At Large.
  2. Voting members get to vote* on proposed changes and key decisions, such as changes to SSSR bylaws.
    • *Voting members are emailed with information about how to vote, prior to any election/decision making vote.

  3. Voting member status allows you to stand for/be appointed to key leadership positions in SSSR, for which voting status is a requirement:

    • an elected position on the Board of Directors,
    • an appointed position as Committee Chair,
    • an appointed position as Treasurer (must be a US citizen) or member of the Financial Advisory Committee.

How to become a voting member – official criteria and process.

  1. The applicant must submit an application for voting membership by 2 June 2025. Applications received after this date will be held over until the next round.
  2. The applicant must attend the conference and be an author on a paper or poster for at least two years (does not need to be consecutive) prior to applying.
  3. The application must include full citation detail (including doi) for three research articles on reading and its related areas from a peer-reviewed journal (e.g., Scientific Studies of Reading, Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Research in Reading, Reading Research Quarterly, etc.) with the applicant as the sole author, first author, or co-author*. Articles may be published or in press. It is essential that the doi is provided so that committee members can easily access the correct article; applications that are missing dois will not be reviewed.
  4. A majority of the Membership and Engagement Committee must agree that the submitted articles constitute evidence that the applicant understands the principles of science and knows how to apply these principles to reading research.
  5. A majority of the Board of Directors must vote to approve the application for voting member status. The Board makes decisions on voting membership once a year, at the annual meeting (and at other times, if necessary).
  6. The application can be made here: https://forms.office.com/e/ZgBrDAhT5z and submitted by June 2, 2025.
