The academy is filled with numerous perplexing and often unwritten rules that senior scholars just seem to know. The focus of SSSR’s 2026 preconference is demystifying two aspects of academia. The AM session will demystify the process of moving a manuscript from initial draft to acceptance in a peer-reviewed journal. The PM session provides insights on several aspects of the grant writing process. Our goal is to support doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career researchers advance in their academic careers.

Demystifying the grant writing process
This PM session focuses on action steps for doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career researchers to move grant ideas from seed to funding. Drawing on the diverse expertise of existing SSSR members, attendees will learn the ins and outs of grant writing from areas like university seed-grants to large government-sponsored or foundational-sponsored grants. Attendees will leave with tools for finding and hopefully obtaining funding related to their emerging research agenda.
