Overview

The 33rd Annual Conference of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR) will be held at the Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre WTC Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from Wednesday, July 15 to Saturday, July 18, 2026. The conference brings together reading researchers from around the world for presentations, workshops, and networking.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Delegates are expected to attend the entire conference, except in cases of exceptional circumstances related to health or religious obligations. Please ensure this commitment when registering.

Preconference Workshops

The academy is filled with numerous perplexing and often unwritten rules that senior scholars just seem to know. The focus of SSSR’s 2026 preconference is demystifying two aspects of academia. Our goal is to support doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career researchers advance in their academic careers.

  • AM Session: Demystifying the Peer-Review and Publication Process
    The AM session focuses on supporting emerging scholars through multiple aspects of the peer-review academic journal submission process. Techniques will be provided to support attendees in moving research topics from conception to acceptance, including tips for finding a journal home and engaging with editors. Lunch (12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) is provided for AM session attendees, with additional opportunities for networking and community building.

  • PM Session: Demystifying the Grant Writing Process
    This session focuses on action steps to move grant ideas from seed to funding. Drawing on the diverse expertise of SSSR members, attendees will learn the ins and outs of grant writing—from university seed-grants to large government or foundational grants. Attendees will leave with tools for finding and obtaining funding related to their research agenda.

  • Conference Dinner & Preconference Workshops: Links to secure your tickets for the annual dinner and the AM/PM skill-building sessions.
  • Official Hotel Booking Tool: Access to our partner, HMC Reservations, which offers a variety of hotel options at different price points (€160–€265 per night) and distances from the venue.

Official Hotel Booking

HMC Reservations is the official hotel partner for the 33rd Annual Conference of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, scheduled to take place from 15–18 July 2026 at the Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre WTC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. HMC offers a variety of hotel options at different price points and distances from the venue, with rates ranging from €160 to €265 per night. HMC provides an online booking tool that delegates can use to reserve rooms for the event.

Note: By means of this booking tool, you can reserve your hotel room for the event. Please note that SSSR is not involved in hotel bookings; delegates make reservations themselves and are personally responsible for payments. If you do not receive your confirmation email within a few minutes, please check your Spam or Junk folder.

Conference Dinner

The SSSR 2026 Annual Conference Dinner will be held on the evening of Friday, July 17, 2026, at LantarenVenster, Rotterdam’s famous movie and music theater. Located just across the river Maas, the venue offers a stunning view over the ‘Rijnhaven’ former port.

You will enjoy a curated tasting experience reflecting Rotterdam’s rich cultural diversity with flavors drawn from Indonesia, Surinam, Italy, Japan, and Morocco. Seafood, meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes will be clearly labeled with dietary and allergy information.

Tickets: $95 (USD) per person. The location can accommodate a maximum of 350 people, so please book early to guarantee your place.
